Monarch Swarm at Kentucky Water's Edge in in Kentucky

Monarch Swarm at Kentucky Water's Edge

by Emerson Beard

Dense clusters of orange and black wings fill the lower frame, hovering just inches above the grassy bank of a Kentucky stream. The last blue light of evening softens the horizon while reflected light from the water creates shimmering highlights on the moving mass. Fine dust hangs low in the air, catching the fading glow and swirling around the insects. Each butterfly rests on the other, forming a living, breathing tapestry of texture. The low angle emphasizes the sheer volume of the swarm against the darkening sky. One wingtip catches a glint of silver from the water's surface.
