Monarch Cluster on Fir Branch Near Spokane

by Alice Howell

Hard coastal glare strikes a dense cluster of monarch butterflies clinging to a rough, gray fir branch. Their orange and black wings overlap in a tight, textured mass against the needle-covered wood. Mist from sea spray hangs low in the air, softening the background reed bed that stretches toward the horizon. The light is bright and unforgiving, casting sharp shadows beneath the butterfly wings and highlighting the fine hairs on the branch. A dark tree trunk frames the left side of the view, creating a natural border around the stillness. The insects remain motionless, their folded wings forming a continuous pattern of color against the green and brown reeds behind them. One droplet of moisture rests on the tip of a pine needle at the bottom right.
