Frozen Rain Monarch Swarm Autumn Ohio in at the edge of a reed bed in Ohio

Frozen Rain Monarch Swarm Autumn Ohio

by Jorge O'Donnell

Thousands of orange and black monarch butterflies cluster densely along the edge of tall, dried reed stalks in an Ohio wetland. The sky above is a flat, featureless blue under the harsh glare of noon. Every single insect displays intricate wing patterns against the pale, brittle grasses. A massive splash of water hangs frozen in mid-air above the swarm, each droplet sharp and perfectly spherical, suspended like glass beads. The reeds frame the chaotic mass of wings from the left, creating a natural border. Sunlight reflects off the wet surfaces of the reeds and the rigid, unmoving water spheres. The butterflies rest in absolute stillness, their collective weight bending the reed tips slightly downward. One droplet near the center catches the light, revealing a tiny, inverted reflection of the orange wings below it.
