Monarch Swarm on Wind-Scoured Ridge in on a wind-scoured ridge near Lahti

Monarch Swarm on Wind-Scoured Ridge

by Ronald Vance

Tropical bright light floods a tight cluster of monarch butterflies resting on a rugged, wind-scoured ridge. The air remains still after a storm, leaving the orange and black wings of the swarm dry and vivid against the grey, weathered stone. Each insect displays intricate vein patterns and white spots along the wing edges, packed densely together in a fragile ecological quiet. The low angle of the midnight sun casts long, sharp shadows across the rough surface, highlighting the texture of the dry lichen and the delicate scales on the butterflies. One wing tip catches the light, glowing with translucent amber at the very edge of the frame.
