Monarch Cluster on Fir Branch Before Dawn in at the edge of a reed bed in the Urals

Monarch Cluster on Fir Branch Before Dawn

by Diego Molina

Deep shadow envelops a dense cluster of monarch butterflies clinging to the rough, gray bark of a fir branch. Thin orange and black wings overlap, creating a textured mosaic against the dark needle tips. A sharp rim light outlines the edges of the wings, separating the group from the gloom. Below, ground fog pools in the reed bed, softening the base of the scene into a white haze. The air remains still, holding the insects in a patient, motionless state. The foreground branch stands in sharp focus while the background dissolves into a blur of gray reeds and mist. one drop of morning dew rests on a nearby needle tip, catching the faint rim light.
