Monarch Caterpillar on Milkweed in Late Summer Light in along a game trail in New York

Monarch Caterpillar on Milkweed in Late Summer Light

by Carole Liu

Late afternoon sun falls through a canopy of broad milkweed leaves, casting shifting patches of bright gold and deep shadow across a game trail in New York. A vibrant monarch caterpillar, striped in bold black, white, and yellow bands, rests on the underside of a velvety green leaf. Raindrops from a brief sun shower bead along the leaf edges, catching the light like tiny prisms. The insect's small legs grip the waxy surface tightly. Around it, the trail is lined with tall grasses and ferns, their fronds glistening with moisture. one drop of water falls from a nearby branch, landing on the leaf tip with a visible ripple.
