Monarch Swarm Drifts Through Wet Grass at Sunset

Late autumn rain falls gently across a dense mass of orange and black monarch butterflies clinging to low grasses and dried reeds near Nagoya. The last light of sunset falls through the drizzle, turning wet wing surfaces into shimmering sheets of amber and deep brown. From a worm's-eye view near the ground, thousands of insects press against one another, forming a living, shifting layer that rises above the damp vegetation. Raindrops bead along the veins of the wings, catching the fading sky above. One drop slides from a wing tip, hanging momentarily before dropping to the dark, wet soil below.
