Warm firelight glows against intricate wooden carvings of ancestral figures framing the entrance to a traditional Maori meeting house. The dark timber contrasts sharply with the ribbed concrete walls of the modern Grey Lynn lobby. Low-hanging clouds outside suggest early summer evening light filtering through unseen windows, casting soft shadows across the polished floor. Every chisel mark on the wood stands out in the amber illumination. The symmetrical arrangement centers the carved doorway between two heavy structural pillars. One carved face stares forward, its eyes catching the flickering flame reflection on the smooth concrete surface nearby.
