Maori Haka Silhouette in Grey Lynn Prayer Hall

by Angelina Howell

Dramatic blue hour light floods the interior of the Grey Lynn prayer hall, casting the performers into stark black silhouettes against the glowing windows. The dancers stand with legs braced and arms raised in the rhythmic posture of the haka, their forms defined by the heavy clouds visible through the glass behind them. Deep shadows obscure facial features and clothing textures, leaving only the sharp lines of their stance and the sweep of their arms. The monsoon season brings a heavy, grey density to the sky outside, against the warm, fading glow inside the hall. The wooden floorboards stretch beneath their feet, leading toward the bright, cloud-filled opening.
