Midnight Maori House in Neon Train Terminal

by Juliana Herrera

Neon blue and magenta light reflects off the polished black timber of a carved Maori meeting house entrance, standing inside the vaulted ceiling of a restored train terminal. Low angle framing emphasizes the towering koru patterns and steep gables against the heavy, overcast midnight sky visible through the high windows. An intact passenger train car sits embedded directly into the structure, its rusted metal siding merging seamlessly with the wooden whakairo carvings. The floor is scattered with fallen autumn leaves, their orange and brown hues against the cool artificial glow. The heavy iron doors of the terminal loom in the background, framing the impossible fusion of indigenous architecture and railway history in a state of ritual stillness.
