Matariki Ceremony Lanterns Wellington Evening

Honeyed evening light spills across a traditional Matariki gathering inside a shrine lined with paper lanterns in Wellington's Courtenay Place. Molten side light carves the faces of participants, highlighting the texture of woven flax cloaks and the grain of wooden beams. The dry season air leaves the clear sky visible through the open upper frame, where the first stars of Matariki shine against deep blue twilight. A wooden archway creates a frame-within-a-frame, focusing attention on the central ritual space. Salt-air freshness hangs in the openness, visible in the way light catches the dust motes near the lanterns. at the edge is the warm glow reflecting off the polished floorboards, mirroring the stars above.
