Maori Meeting House in Britomart Glass Arcade
Copper-toned light washes over the intricate carvings of a Maori meeting house standing inside the glass-roofed arcade of Britomart in Auckland. The ancestral figures on the entrance gable rise in dark timber against the pale winter sky visible through the roof panels. Long shadows stretch across the polished floor, cast by the low sun struggling through the heavy overcast clouds. Reflections in the surrounding glass walls double the structure, creating a mirrored composition where the real building meets its inverted image. Bare branches of nearby winter trees frame the upper windows, their thin silhouettes cutting against the gray expanse. The texture of the weathered wood grain is sharp, against the smooth, cool surface of the metal framework supporting the roof. A final beam of light catches the edge of a carved figure's eye, highlighting the deep gouge of the pupil.
