Maori Meeting House Carvings in Concrete Lobby

Warm afternoon light floods through a high skylight, illuminating the intricate ancestral figures carved into the dark wood entrance of a traditional Maori meeting house. The polished timber contrasts sharply with the ribbed, grey concrete walls of the modern Auckland lobby surrounding it. Sunlight catches the deep grooves of the carvings, highlighting the texture of the wood grain against the smooth, industrial concrete. Early autumn brings a softness to the light filtering from above, casting gentle shadows that define the curves of the figures. A small potted fern rests on the concrete floor near the base of the structure, adding a touch of green to the monochrome surroundings. at the edge is a subtle reflection of the carvings on the polished floor surface.
