Levee Pump House Window Glowing Over Floodwater

by Steven Bravo

Bright white light spills from a rectangular window set into a concrete levee pump house, cutting through the humid midday haze. Below, murky brown floodwater stretches to the horizon, reflecting the harsh sky. To the left, the rusted metal rungs of a water tower ladder climb vertically, against the smooth, gray masonry of the structure. Rain has recently passed, leaving droplets beaded on the window frame and the wet metal steps. The water level rises high, lapping just below the concrete base of the pump house. A perfect symmetry anchors the composition, with the ladder on one side and the glowing opening centered against the flat, gray expanse of the flooded landscape.
