Repairing Sandal in Fez in in Fez, Morocco

Repairing Sandal in Fez

by Angelina Galvan

Under the flat, diffused light of an overcast midday, a narrow alleyway in the Fez medina reveals a small, makeshift repair station set up on a low stone step. A local artisan, hands stained with graphite and grease, balances a mechanical pencil against the hinge of a worn leather sandal, using a small mallet to gently tap a loose rivet into place. Beside him, a rusted iron hook hangs from a nearby wooden post, catching the dull ambient light, while a ladder-back chair sits empty nearby, its slats dusted with fine white plaster from the surrounding walls.
