Lantern Light in Glasgow Shrine Cellar

by Catherine Hoffman

Warm amber glow emanates from a single paper lantern suspended in the center of a stone cellar. The rough-hewn granite walls rise symmetrically on both sides, lined with rows of identical unlit lanterns that create a rhythmic pattern of shadows. Late autumn light falls through high, narrow openings, reflecting off a damp stone floor that mirrors the warm centers of the lit lanterns. The heavy overcast sky outside casts a cool, flat blue tone over the upper stonework, against the intimate orange pool of light below. Each stone block shows deep weathering and moss growth near the base, at the base of the space in age and dampness. The reflection on the wet floor extends the vertical symmetry, merging the light source with its own inverted image.
