Slate Quarry Terraces Flooded Pit Early Spring

Sunlight cuts through fine dust suspended in the air, illuminating the jagged edges of a slate quarry near Birmingham. Terraced walls rise in stepped layers, their gray surfaces rough and fractured from extraction. A deep pit fills with stagnant water, reflecting the pale blue sky above. The water's surface remains undisturbed, mirroring the sheer vertical drops of the rock faces. Early spring light strikes the upper ledges, casting sharp shadows into the crevices where the stone meets the water. Dust particles glow in the beams, hovering motionless against the industrial backdrop. The lowest visible stone edge rests just beneath the waterline, its texture rough and wet.
