Austrian Slate Quarry Flooded Pit Terraced Walls

by Shirley Kramer

Stacked terraces of dark gray slate rise steeply from a water-filled excavation pit. The rock faces show rough, fractured textures where layers have been stripped away, revealing sharp edges and jagged surfaces. Turbid water fills the bottom of the pit, reflecting the heavy, dramatic clouds hovering above. Bright, clear mountain light cuts through the overcast sky, illuminating the wet stone and creating high contrast between the deep shadows in the crevices and the sunlit ridges. Patches of green moss rest on the damp lower sections of the quarry walls, while the upper terraces remain dry and stark. The sheer scale of the cut stone looms over the stagnant water, showing the industrial history of the site. One piece of rusted metal lies half-submerged near the water's edge.
