Stone Cellar Lantern Late Autumn Petersburg in in a ceremonial hall in St Petersburg

Stone Cellar Lantern Late Autumn Petersburg

by Jane Haney

Warm amber glow spills from an iron lantern held by a weathered hand against the rough gray stone of a cellar wall. The light cuts through the soft, diffused afternoon haze filtering into the ceremonial hall, illuminating dust particles that hang suspended in the air. Deep shadows nestle in the mortar cracks, against the bright metal rim of the lantern. Outside the high, narrow window, bare branches of late autumn trees press against the glass, their skeletal forms visible in the pale gray light. The stone floor shows signs of wear, with patches of dampness reflecting the lantern's steady flame. A faint shadow of the lantern's handle stretches across the uneven masonry, at the base of the object in the cold, resilient architecture of the northern Russian interior.
