Glass Blowing in Jammu Shrine Lantern Corridor

by Cindy Page

Molten orange glass glows fiercely as a craftsman shapes a sphere in the center of a long corridor. Identical wooden doors line both walls, creating a repeating pattern that extends infinitely into the distance. Copper-toned light from before dusk washes the scene, highlighting the sheen of wet monsoon air on the stone floor. Dozens of paper lanterns hang in perfect rows, casting soft halos against the dark wood. The glass blower stands with intense focus, his silhouette sharp against the bright molten metal. Each door reflects the same warm glow, their handles aligned in a rigid, impossible symmetry that defies the logic of a shrine. at the edge is the reflection of the glowing glass orb on the polished surface of the nearest door.
