Iris Eye Detail on Zimbabwe Cliff After Rain
by Jon Reeves
Vivid green and brown rings of a human iris dominate the left foreground, captured in extreme close-up against a vast backdrop. Behind the sharp biological texture, a rugged cliff edge stretches horizontally, its rock face coated in white salt spray from the ocean. The late afternoon sun falls through clearing clouds, casting soft, diffuse light that highlights the wet sheen on the stone. Cool season winds whip the sparse, dry grasses along the precipice, bending them sharply against the wind. The sky above holds a pale, washed-out blue, against the deep, organic tones of the eye. One droplet of water rests on the lower eyelid, mirroring the distant horizon line. The composition juxtaposes the intimate complexity of the eye with the raw, exposed scale of the Zimbabwean coast.
