Horsetail Plants on Salt Spray Cliff Edge in along a salt-sprayed cliff edge in Paraná

Horsetail Plants on Salt Spray Cliff Edge

by Malcolm Wiley

Hard midday sunlight flattens the textures of a dense horsetail colony clinging to the eroded edge of a salt-sprayed cliff in Paraná. The sharp, segmented stems rise vertically in varying shades of olive and rusted brown, signaling peak autumn decay. Low-hanging gray clouds press against the horizon, diffusing the glare just enough to reveal the rough, mineral-crusted soil beneath the roots. A shallow depth of field blurs the distant river bank into a soft wash of muted greens and grays, isolating the brittle plant stalks in the foreground. The tips of the tallest fronds lean slightly, caught in a persistent coastal breeze, their fine details sharp against the hazy, overcast sky. One frond tip breaks just below the frame, ending in a jagged, weathered edge.
