Inflated Pufferfish Drifts Over Seagrass in Reykjavik

by Julie Richards

A pufferfish expands into a rigid, spiky sphere, hovering just above a bed of dark green seagrass within a shallow tide pool. The water is exceptionally clear, revealing the sandy bottom and the texture of the grass blades beneath the fish. Noon light penetrates the surface, creating a flat, bright glare that illuminates the white and yellow spots on the fish's inflated skin. Slow ripples distort the view slightly, bending the light into shifting patterns across the creature's surface. The water appears cool and still, holding the fish in a moment of suspended motion. Tiny bubbles rest on the grass tips near the bottom edge, marking the depth of the pool.
