Hydrophone Array Descending Into Steel Blue Water in beside a tidal survey transect near Ekkamai, Bangkok

Hydrophone Array Descending Into Steel Blue Water

by Linda Beltran

Steel-blue water ripples gently beneath a late-night sky, where faint ground glow from Ekkamai mingles with distant starlight. A complex hydrophone array descends from the dark hull of a research vessel, its cables and sensors cutting through the low-hanging clouds. The equipment glimmers with a wet sheen, reflecting the ambient light as it sinks deeper into the tidal survey transect. Shallow depth of field blurs the distant shoreline while keeping the descending instruments sharp against the darkening horizon. The water's surface remains calm, disturbed only by the slow entry of the scientific gear. One cable end dips into the liquid, leaving a faint wake that ripples outward.
