Hydrophone Array Descending Into Desert Water in along a rocky geology outcrop in the Gobi Desert

Hydrophone Array Descending Into Desert Water

by Yuki Nichols

Steel-blue water fills a shallow depression carved into the red sandstone of a rocky Gobi outcrop. A metal hydrophone array descends from the wooden railing of a research vessel floating on this isolated pool. The clear, dry mountain light reflects sharply off the wet surface, highlighting the ripple patterns created by the descending equipment. Humid air hangs low, visible as a faint haze near the water's edge where droplets rest on the dark, jagged rocks. The wooden planks of the vessel deck show grain and weathering, against the smooth, cool water. Ropes hang taut against the bright sky, leading the eye down to the submerged instruments. at the edge is a single bubble rising from the metal sensor head.
