Hydrophone Spool on Toamasina Pier

by Donna Higgins

Wet concrete planks of the Toamasina pier glisten under sharp late-afternoon light during the rainy season. A cylindrical hydrophone spool rests on the damp surface beside a cluster of bright orange buoys. The metal housings of the instrument catch the sun, creating small, intense reflections from indicator lights that shimmer across the curved surfaces. Water beads form on the weathered texture of the spool's casing. The orange buoys float in shallow, choppy water just beyond the pier's edge, their vibrant color against the grey, rain-slicked wood. Reflections of the equipment stretch across the wet floorboards toward the horizon.
