Winter Hydrophone Buoy Craned Over Morning Water
by Lane Ayala
Deep shadows cloak the lower half of a heavy steel crane arm as it hovers over the glassy surface of a river near Khanewal. The winter morning air holds the water in a flat, dark mirror, reflecting the pale gray sky above. A cylindrical hydrophone buoy, its metal housing cold and unblemished, hangs suspended by thick cables just inches above the liquid. Rim light traces the curved edges of the buoy and the crane's structural joints, creating sharp, bright silhouettes against the deep gloom. Small amber and green indicator lights glow on the instrument's face, their colors reflecting as distinct, shimmering spots on the wet metal casing. The composition places the crane's pivot point at the left third, balancing the suspended equipment against the vast, still expanse of water to the right. One droplet of condensation rests on the edge of the buoy's sensor port.
