Hydrophone Array Lowered in Rhode Island

by Ross Clements

Copper-toned light washes over the heavy steel cables of a hydrophone array as they descend toward the dark water. Thick synthetic ropes strain against the rigging of a research vessel, their texture rough and weathered by salt spray. The equipment, a cluster of cylindrical sensors and metallic brackets, hangs suspended in mid-air, wet and glistening under the heavy overcast sky. Raindrops bead on the black rubber housing, reflecting the dimming golden hour glow. The water below churns with the movement of a tidal survey transect, disturbed by the monsoon season's heavy rains. Metal clamps secure the array, showing signs of operational use. Rain streaks run down the side of the nearest sensor.
