Copper Beech on North Carolina Cliff at Dawn in along a salt-sprayed cliff edge in North Carolina

Copper Beech on North Carolina Cliff at Dawn

by Lorenzo Kelley

Soft overcast light washes the copper beech tree standing alone against a pale sky. Its leaves display a deep, rusty red hue, against the muted greens of surrounding grass. Ground fog pools in the hollows of the coastal terrain, rising just below the tree's lower branches. Salt spray has weathered the bark to a grayish tone near the trunk. The scene is framed by empty sky and distant horizon, showing the tree's solitary presence. Low clouds drift slowly above the cliff edge. One branch extends outward, its tip catching the faint morning glow. The fog obscures the base of the tree, making it appear to float above the ground.
