Winter Clematis on Stone Wall Taipei Cliff
by Lincoln Hale
Pale morning light strikes the horizon haze above a weathered stone wall clinging to the Da'an cliff edge. A thick clematis vine dominates the frame, its woody stems tangled tightly against the rough, salt-stained masonry. The vines display a mix of dormant brown bark and clusters of small, dried seed heads, signaling the dead of winter. The stone surface shows deep gray fissures and patches of white crystalline residue from ocean spray. Soft, cool shadows fall across the lower masonry while the upper wall catches the first golden rays of the low sun. A perfectly clear, pale blue sky fills the negative space above, isolating the texture of the plant and rock against the vast emptiness of the early morning air. at the edge is a single dried leaf clinging to the very top edge of the wall.
