Backlit Horsetail Colony in Mississippi Rain in in a bloom-heavy meadow in Mississippi

Backlit Horsetail Colony in Mississippi Rain

by Lola Clements

Tall horsetail stalks rise in a dense cluster from the muddy bank of a Mississippi river, their segmented stems forming dark silhouettes against a burning orange sunset. Steady rain falls in visible, slanted streaks that blur the background while highlighting the wet, glossy texture of the green fronds. The heavy late summer clouds press low, diffusing the fading light into a soft glow that outlines every jagged tip of the plants. Surrounding the colony, the meadow stretches into deep negative space, where distant grasses bow under the weight of the water. Raindrops bead on the rigid surfaces, catching the last rays of the day before vanishing into the dark, saturated soil below.
