Surreal Fern Waterfall Cliff Edge Medellín

by Ruth Gibson

Vibrant green fronds of a maidenhair fern cling to a jagged cliff face where a narrow stream of water erupts from a hairline crack in the stone. The liquid pours downward with impossible force, defying the lack of any visible source or plumbing within the rock. Salt spray coats the wet surfaces in a crystalline haze, catching the low golden light of a sunrise that breaks through a thick horizon haze. Autumn leaves in shades of russet and amber scatter across the foreground, whipping violently in a gale that bends the fern fronds sideways. The cliff edge drops into deep negative space, isolating the impossible flow against the pale sky. A final droplet hangs suspended on the tip of a black stem, refracting the morning glow.
