Horizontal Tree Emerging from River Delta Wall in far above river meanders near Bor

Horizontal Tree Emerging from River Delta Wall

by Alfred Kelly

Soft, diffused light after rain washes over the sprawling river delta near Bor, revealing branching channels that map the landscape in shades of slate and deep teal. The water flows with slow, deliberate curves against the cool, muted banks of the dry season. High above, a massive, fully leafed tree erupts horizontally from a sheer, vertical wall of earth that should be impossible to support such growth. Its branches extend parallel to the water's surface, defying gravity while casting sharp, distinct shadows onto the wet sediment below. The clear sky stretches endlessly above, framing the surreal anomaly where the tree's roots dig into the vertical bank and its foliage hovers over the water channels. The green leaves contrast vividly against the grey-brown earth and the silver-blue sheen of the river.
