Hermit Crab Migration at Dawn in Iceland in along a game trail in Iceland

Hermit Crab Migration at Dawn in Iceland

by Rosa Callahan

Pale gray sand stretches under a sky brightening with the first rays of sunrise. Tiny hermit crabs with spiraled shells move in a dense, shifting line across the wet surface. Their small legs and antennae are barely visible as dark silhouettes against the glowing horizon. Fine rain falls in a light drizzle, creating a misty veil that softens the edges of the shells. The endless summer light of dawn casts long, low shadows that stretch across the beach. Wet sand reflects the pale blue and orange hues of the sky. One cluster of shells rests near a small depression in the ground, their rough textures catching the faint morning glow.
