Colombian Sunset Mammatus Clouds with Inverted Shadows
by Thelma Weber
Violet and molten gold flood the sky above the Colombian Andes, illuminating bulbous mammatus clouds that hang like heavy pouches against a perfectly clear horizon. The monsoon season leaves the air sharp and dry, allowing the light to cut through the atmosphere without haze. Deep purple shadows drape the undersides of the cloud formations, yet these shadows extend upward toward the sun rather than downward. This impossible direction defies the physics of the setting sun, creating a visual contradiction where darkness climbs into the brilliance. The layers of clouds recede into the distance, each pouch distinct and textured. At the bottom edge, a faint shadow from a distant mountain peak points sideways, anchoring the surreal upward flow to the grounded landscape.
