Fireflies in Bamboo Grove at Dusk Near Havana in under a band of cold starlight near Fusterlandia, Havana

Fireflies in Bamboo Grove at Dusk Near Havana

by Lloyd Koch

Cool twilight settles over a dense cluster of tall bamboo stalks, their green and grey sheaths standing rigid against a fading sky. A thin layer of fog rests on the forest floor, softening the base of the culms where small, golden fireflies drift in rhythmic pulses. The starlight above cuts a sharp, cold band through the darkness, against the warm, hazy orange glow of distant Havana on the horizon. Mist wraps the lower stems in a pale veil, while the fireflies cast tiny, intermittent points of light that flicker against the dark green leaves. One firefly rests on a bamboo node, its glow reflecting faintly on the wet surface of the stalk.
