Frosty Night in Basra Monastery Ruins in beside a well in a monastic cloister in Basra

Frosty Night in Basra Monastery Ruins

by Tonya Craig

Pale frost coats the weathered stone surfaces of an ancient cloister in Basra, where the deep night has settled into a heavy silence. Rim light traces the curved tops of the arches, separating the dark masonry from the shadowed courtyard beyond. The ground is a textured blanket of white crystals resting on cracked earth and overgrown weeds. Deep shadows pool beneath the archways, while the frost on the well's edge glimmers with a faint, cold intensity. Leading lines of the stone pillars draw the gaze toward the center of the courtyard, showing the quiet stillness of the early autumn night. The air appears still, captured only by the unbroken layer of ice on every surface.
