Diver Surfaces with Sea Urchin Net Near Mellah Coast

by Julian Gilmore

Hard coastal glare illuminates a diver breaking the surface near the rocky banks of the Mellah district in Essaouira. The diver lifts a heavy net brimming with spiny sea urchins, their dark purple shells contrasting against the churning white foam. Early winter air hangs low with gray clouds that cast a flat, diffused shadow over the water while the sun strikes the wet skin and gear with sharp highlights. The rocky shoreline features rough, salt-bleached stones that slope steeply into the river mouth. Water droplets rest on the diver's wetsuit, catching the light in tiny, scattered points before sliding down the fabric. One urchin shell rests on the edge of the net, its spines rigid and sharp against the dark water.
