Water Polo Player Rising to Shoot at Sunset

Brick-red firelight washes over a water polo player rising from the harbor quay near Deir ez-Zor. The athlete's shoulders break the surface tension, muscles defined against the dark water. Condensation hangs in the air as visible white breath, indicating the early summer chill despite the warm glow. The player's hands grip a red ball high above the head, fingers spread in preparation for a powerful throw. Behind the figure, rough stone walls of the quay rise vertically, textured with age and salt stains. Shadows stretch long across the wet stone, sharp and distinct under the directional firelight. The athlete's eyes focus forward, locked on an unseen target, while droplets slide from the wet skin into the water below.
