Dew on Spider Web Above Glacial Stream

by Chase Whitley

Sunlight falls through scattered leaves, illuminating a delicate spider web stretched across a narrow glacial stream near Niamey. Thousands of water droplets rest on the silk threads, catching the bright midmorning light and turning the web into a string of tiny, trembling diamonds. Below, the water flows with a cool, pale blue hue, reflecting the low-hanging clouds that dominate the sky. The surrounding vegetation shows the subtle shift of the turning seasons, with some leaves turning yellow while others remain deep green. The web hangs at the edge of a stone bank, anchored by a single dry twig. One droplet slides slowly down a radial thread, leaving a faint, wet trail on the silk before disappearing into the mist rising from the cold water.
