Melting Web Droplet in Redwood Grove

by Idris Marks

Thick white mist presses against towering redwood trunks under a flat, unyielding noon sun. A spider web stretches horizontally across the frame, its silk threads sharp and distinct against the hazy background. At the center of the web, a large water droplet hangs, defying physics as it melts downward. The clear liquid loses its spherical tension, flowing like warm wax into a growing, viscous pool on the forest floor below. Fine dew coats the nearby ferns and mossy bark, glistening in the bright light. The melting droplet casts a distorted, elongated shadow on the damp earth, while the rigid web structure remains intact above the liquid flow. one drop of melted fluid rests on the lowest strand, holding its shape against gravity.
