Winter Snow Squall Over Murmansk Lake Horizon
by Paula Morse
Thick white mist rolls across the dark, choppy surface of a frozen lake, obscuring the water where a heavy snow squall descends. In the background, a formidable wall of stacked thunderheads dominates the horizon, their grey undersides heavy with precipitation. The late afternoon light remains soft and diffused, casting a uniform, pale glow that flattens the shadows and emphasizes the texture of the falling snow. The water appears black and turbulent beneath the falling flakes, contrasting sharply with the bright, churning cloud base. Along the far shore, faint outlines of snow-dusted evergreens stand resilient against the gale. The sky transitions from a pale, washed-out blue near the horizon to a deep, bruised charcoal at the cloud tops, creating a stark, cold palette. The edge of the squall forms a jagged, vertical curtain of white against the darker water.
