Machu Picchu Terraces Above Cloud Forest
by Maureen Hays
Ancient Incan stone terraces cascade down a steep Andean mountainside, their weathered surfaces glowing in the copper-toned light of late afternoon. Below, a dense sea of cloud forest mist rests on the valley floor, obscuring the floodplain entirely. The stones display varying shades of grey and brown, their rough textures softened by the humid air rising from the rain-soaked vegetation. Heat haze shimmers above the distant green canopy, distorting the horizon line where the sky meets the mountain ridge. Narrow dirt paths wind between the agricultural steps, leading toward the jagged peaks of Huayna Picchu in the background. The light catches the edge of a central retaining wall, highlighting a single patch of vibrant green moss growing in a stone crevice.
