Silhouetted Stone Trees After Rain in across a floodplain after rain near Omdurman

Silhouetted Stone Trees After Rain

by Katherine Goodwin

Flat noon light bleaches the wet floodplain near Omdurman, turning the ground into a shimmering sheet of mud and scattered water. Dark, weathered stone trees rise from the silt, their jagged forms cut sharply against the bright sky. The air hangs heavy with moisture, visible as a faint haze that softens the distant mountain ridges. Sea spray drifts across the lowlands, clinging to the rough, eroded bark of the petrified trunks. The landscape feels vast and empty, defined by the stark contrast between the dark, vertical stone shapes and the pale, horizontal expanse of the wet earth. A thin layer of water reflects the sky along the base of the nearest tree trunk.
