Cypress Trees on Salt-Sprayed Cliff Near Hanover

by Herman McKay

Dark green cypress trees line a rugged cliff edge where salt-stained granite meets humid air. Late afternoon light reflects off nearby water, washing the rough bark and needle clusters in a shimmering, cool glow. Patches of yellowing grass at the base mark the turn of seasons against the deep evergreen foliage. Negative space frames the vertical trunks, isolating their wild alignment along the precipice. Tiny water droplets cling to branches, catching the reflected brightness in sharp, brief flashes. One frond bends under the weight of a lingering drop at the very edge.
