Frost Covered Araucaria Tree at Dawn in along a salt-sprayed cliff edge near Guilin

Frost Covered Araucaria Tree at Dawn

by Sally Schroeder

Icy crystals coat the sharp, scale-like leaves of a solitary Araucaria tree standing at the edge of a misty cliff. The air hangs heavy with a pale, diffused dawn light that softens the surrounding landscape into muted grays and cool blues. Frost clings to every branch, creating a textured, white crust that contrasts with the deep green needles beneath. The ground below is blanketed in a thick layer of white frost, extending into the negative space that frames the tree. This specific plant, native to Chilean forests, appears out of place yet grounded against the rugged, salt-sprayed rock of the cliff edge. The light reflects off the icy needles, highlighting their rigid, geometric structure. One droplet of melting frost hangs from the lowest branch tip.
