Cypress Knees Rising from Dark Water in Mexico City in along a salt-sprayed cliff edge near Mexico City

Cypress Knees Rising from Dark Water in Mexico City

by Lance Grant

Dark, still water fills the foreground where woody cypress knees protrude vertically like broken pillars. Salt spray coats the rough bark in a fine, white grain against the deep brown of the wood. Behind the immediate cluster, layers of similar roots recede into a hazy distance, blurring the line between water and sky under the harsh, flat glare of noon. The dry mountain light strikes the water surface without creating soft shadows, highlighting the rigid texture of the wood. A faint mist hangs low, suggesting recent rain or sea spray drifting over the edge. The closest knee shows a jagged break near the base, revealing pale, fibrous interior wood against the dark liquid.
