Concrete Wall Split by Roots in Dutch Ruin in along a vine-choked corridor in Netherlands

Concrete Wall Split by Roots in Dutch Ruin

by Barry Pruitt

Steel-blue evening light washes over a weathered concrete corridor in the Netherlands, where late spring mist softens the edges of the structure. Thick tree roots have split the gray masonry, pushing outward in pale, woody ridges that contrast with the smooth, pitted surface of the ruin. Dense green vines climb the walls, their leaves catching the fading ambient glow. The corridor narrows ahead, framed by the natural arch of overgrown branches and stone. Moss rests on the damp lower sections, while the upper walls remain exposed to the cool, foggy air. A deep crack runs vertically through the center, revealing the raw, jagged interior where the concrete has given way to the relentless growth of the forest reclaiming the space.
