Rusted Bell in Congo Schoolhouse Ruins in inside a roofless nave in Congo

Rusted Bell in Congo Schoolhouse Ruins

by Anthony White

First rays of morning light slice through the open roof of a roofless schoolhouse nave in the Congo, illuminating floating dust and damp air after a storm. The interior walls, stripped of plaster, reveal rough red clay and exposed brickwork softened by years of rain. A heavy, rusted iron bell hangs suspended in the wooden tower frame, its surface pitted with orange corrosion. Green vines creep up the crumbling corners, against the deep gray shadows pooling on the wet floor. Sunlight catches the wet edge of a broken window pane, highlighting the texture of moss growing on the sill. The bell rests against a backdrop of sky, its metal spine gleaming faintly where the water has dried.
