Sunset Glow on Strathcona Canal Aqueduct in beneath transmission towers near Strathcona, Vancouver

Sunset Glow on Strathcona Canal Aqueduct

by Kyle Barry

Warm amber light from the setting sun reflects off the rippling surface of water flowing within a concrete aqueduct. The channel stretches forward, its parallel walls creating strong converging lines that lead toward a distant vanishing point. Overhead, the dark steel lattice of transmission towers frames the sky, their structural legs disappearing into the background. A fine, steady drizzle creates a thin mist rising from the water, softening the edges of the gray concrete. The wet surfaces of the channel gleam under the low-angle light, highlighting the smooth texture of the cement against the dry, dusty banks on either side. The water moves steadily, carrying the reflection of the orange sky down the length of the trough. A dark shadow falls across the right inner wall, marking the boundary between light and shade.
